Lowell, Arkansas

Lowell, AR

Lowell, Arkansas, is a suburban city in Benton County with a population of approximately 9,400. It lies nestled in the Ozarks and is surrounded by larger cities like Springdale, Rogers, and Bentonville. It has long been considered a bedroom community, meaning that it is much more residential than commercial. Today, many of its residents still commute to those larger nearby cities for work and recreation, but that is slowly changing. Transportation giant J.B. Hunt Transport Services calls it home, and one of the biggest retail companies in the world, Amazon, opened a warehouse here in February 2022.

It's no surprise that Lowell is evolving and thriving. Throughout the town's history, adaptability has been a core part of its identity. Lowell is a classic example of American ingenuity, perseverance, and reinvention. The town completely rebuilt itself after it was destroyed in the Civil War. Then, in 1881, it even relocated itself. Lowell had a different name then Bloomington; however, most people referred to it as "Mudtown" because the road in was so muddy that stagecoaches were constantly getting stuck. The locals solved the issue and dodged their dubious nickname by literally relocating the entire town to the west in 1881, a move that fostered its continued growth by bringing it closer to the railroad. When they moved, they rebranded themselves as Lowell. They haven't forgotten their mucky roots, however. Lowell celebrates their history annually with a series of "Mudtown Days" events.
