Sulphur Springs

Sulphur Springs, Arkansas

Sulphur Springs, AR

The tiny hamlet of Sulphur Springs in Benton County is a community of fewer than 500 residents. It encompasses a scant square mile, all land, and it's not even the only Sulphur Springs in Arkansas. There are four more with the same name. But this Sulphur Springs is like none other. It gives us a rare glimpse into a craze that swept our country during the Victorian Age, influencing how people vacationed and how we attended to our health. The tale of the town is a chronicle of triumph, tragedy, and, ultimately, resilience. It's the story of a mineral spa town's rise, fall, and transformation.

A Storied History

Though the town of Sulphur Springs is all land, it contains numerous natural mineral springs, including a rare lithium spring, which held a special appeal that drew visitors from far and wide. It was once considered extraordinarily healthful to bathe in those precious waters. By 1885, a spa resort community had formed on the site, soon becoming an important destination.

But there were problems. Fancy hotels quickly sprouted up but slowly failed as there wasn't enough high-end clientele to sustain them. However, a tragic fire in the early 1900s finally brought about the end of Sulphur Springs' success as a spa town. Because of that fire, they went without electricity for four years, and the spa industry passed them by. Still, Sulphur Springs persevered. The old hotels were turned into schools, new industries bloomed, and it gradually transformed into the peaceful, quiet town it is today.
