Gateway, AR

When it comes to rural country allure, there is perhaps no place in Arkansas that can compare to the charismatic little town known as Gateway. Tiny in population with fewer than 400 residents, Gateway punctuates the foothills of the Ozark Mountains with remarkable beauty. It sits on a plateau above sea level with a breathtaking view of Beaver Lake and the White River Valley. Surrounded by lush green rolling hills, expansive farmland, and quaint architecture that dates back to the 1800s, you might feel like you’ve stepped back in time to a simpler way of life. It is no small wonder that the residents regard their little oasis as the best-kept secret in Arkansas---although it really isn’t that much of a secret. Bestplaces.net ranks Gateway as one of the best areas to live in the state, awarding it a perfect five stars. It boasts a strong economy, excellent schools, an endless variety of employment opportunities, and a downright enviable cost of living.

Also, not a secret is how the town got its name. Gateway borders Missouri to the north, serving as a literal gateway to the state's northwest region along the famous U.S. Highway 62. It’s a beckoning invitation to the Fayetteville-Springdale-Rogers Metro Area, steeped in history, southern charm, and no doubt some excellent sweet tea as well.

So, what does such a small town have to offer in terms of entertainment, you might ask? First of all, we have to talk about the fishing. Even before the town was settled in the early 1800s, the Osage frequented the area to hunt and fish. It’s still some of the best in the region, and no fishing trip is complete without a stop at the Beaver Dam Store, a quirky specialty gift shop that offers bait and a whole lot more.

If you are looking for some other sweet treats to go with that tall glass of sweet tea, be sure to stop at Martin Greer’s Candies. Made by hand the old-fashioned way with an old-time candy store vibe to match, the candy here is top-notch. With endless 5-star reviews like “Chocoholic Heaven” and “Wow Wow Wow,” this multigenerational Swiss family candymaker won’t disappoint you. But savory foodies, take heart because Gateway has you covered. For to-die-for-fried chicken, don’t miss the Short Stop. Another fantastic place to eat is the Weingarten, a German American Steakhouse that offers great steaks and tasty authentic German dishes.

The Pea Ridge National Military Park is a must-see destination if you are a history buff. The infamous Battle of Pea Ridge was fought right here during the Civil War, a pivotal skirmish securing the Union’s foothold in the area. Many say that the battlefield is very haunted, so don’t be surprised if you hear the faint sound of muskets firing on the breeze. And if hauntings intrigue you, make sure you take a drive down Radar Road heading towards the city of Rogers, where locals have seen a phantom horse and rider many times.

If you are looking for something a little more thrilling without ghosts, check out the Terrifying Beaver Bridge to nearby Beaver. Yes, it’s really named “Terrifying,” and for a good reason. It’s a one-lane, wooden plank suspension bridge over the White River that stretches over 500 feet long---and trust us when we tell you that it is bound to leave you a little wobbly in the knees. () Another interesting spot to explore is the Thornwood Chapel in neighboring Eureka Springs. It’s a unique wood-and-glass church literally built in the forest. Lastly, be sure to check out Jack the Giant Bunny along Rte. 62. Jack towers over the landscape and has been a float, a greeter, and a welcoming host outside the old Hillbilly Restaurant. The restaurant is now closed, but Jack is still there and a big draw for visitors (and as photogenic as ever.

Jack may be a rabbit, but he is certainly no pest, although Gateway has its share of those, too, unfortunately.
